TALX achieves 100 percent year-to-year growth of The
Work Number for Everyone

Employers contracting automated employment and salary verification
service doubles

ST. LOUIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 3, 1997--TALX Corporation (NASDAQ:TALX) today
announced that since last year, The Work Number for Everyone(R) has achieved 100 percent
annual growth in the number of employers who use the service to outsource employment
verification.

As of June 1996, nearly 69 employers were using The Work Number to outsource employment
verification. Today that number has doubled to nearly 150, including Wal Mart -- the nation's
largest employer -- and several federal government agencies. This is a growing trend among
Human Resources departments that have realized the impact automation can have on the
employment verification process.

The Work Number national database consists of over 10 million employee salary and employment
records from many large corporations such as Hewlett Packard, J.C. Penney, Motorola, Procter
& Gamble, Quaker Oats Company, Sears Roebuck & Company and Walgreens. And most
recently, Tribune Company has signed onto the service.

``Time and time again, we have been told that The Work Number has made a dramatic impact on
the day-to-day administrative tasks within Human Resources departments of many large
organizations,'' commented Gary Been, national product director for TALX. ``And lenders
appreciate the immediate access to accurate data for processing paperwork. This is definitely a
win-win situation for all those involved.''

How It Works - The Work Number for Everyone

The Work Number for Everyone is an automated solution for large companies that find
employment verification a burdensome, expensive administrative task. Prior to the establishment of
The Work Number, a lender would call the employer to verify an employee's salary and
employment history as a normal course of the loan underwriting process.

Manual processing of employment verification requests could take days or weeks depending on
the number of requests received.

Now under The Work Number, an employee applying for a loan simply provides the lender with
an authorization code to access the service. This ensures employee information is kept confidential
to only those who are authorized to use the system. Lenders then have instant telephone access to
salary and employment information. They can also request verification by fax if necessary. To
ensure accuracy, employee information in the database is updated each pay period by participating
employers.

For large employers who process tens of thousands of requests per year, The Work Number
streamlines the employment verification process, reducing the time and expense involved in
manually processing requests. The service directly links lenders to the information they need and
also speeds the loan approval process for employees.

Employment verification through The Work Number is not just for loan approval. Many property
managers, leasing companies and credit card issuers have incorporated The Work Number service
into their leasing or credit approval process as well.
