Well, there are still enough terrible memories, and there is occasional contemporary wickedness, so that the insecurity is understandable. But ghetto culture, on many levels, is self- defeating, and must finally be overcome......

My response would be that both political parties greatly overstate the effect that either Jesse Jackson or Colin Powell has. (Interestingly, you didn't include Clarence Thomas in your good guys list.) The fact of the matter is we're still dealing with year 1800 issues 200 years later. We're still dealing with the after-effects of economic servitude, denying blacks the right/opportunity to read, the break-up of the family through the sale of human beings. Like it or not, that is the truth.
