Gary: Desperate Jabs and Diversion Tactics

How else would you characterize voluntary bashing of its competitors? Mind you both Chambers and Kennedy had talked much about their competition even before the question and answer period. Listening to the cc. it sounded as though, "We may go down on this news, but boy are we going to take our competition down as well!!"

I must say that given their solid quarter, had Chambers focussed on their results, it would have come out more genuine. What did he say? "Cisco is by far the most balanced when it comes to revenues from its lines of businesses and when it comes to revenues from geographical areas, as opposed to some of our competition". Granted NT is not a big player in the Enterprise area, but Cisco doesn't have much to brag about in the Wireless Infrastructure either. You don't see Roth harping about that do you? Unless Chambers meant "In businesses that we are involved in, our competition may not be as balanced, though they may have their own balance in other areas".

Just as an aside, another interesting thing that I observed during the CC is the increase in Cisco's headcount. I forget the actual numbers but wasn't it close to mid 30,000? I think that they are losing some of their edge in this area. JMHO. I still think that Cisco is a good long term bet and might get in tomorrow.
