OFDM Forum Submits Fixed Wireless Access Standard

CALGARY, ALBERTA--

Working Group Participants Collaborate On IEEE 802.16.3 Submission

Following its meeting held in Tampa, FL last week, the OFDM Forum,
an association organized to promote a single OFDM technology-based
standard around the world, today announced that its Fixed Wireless
Access Working Group has submitted a physical layer proposal using
orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) technology,
which will be presented to the Institute of Electrical and
Electronics Engineers (IEEE)'s 802.16.3 subcommittee at the IEEE's
meetings later this week.

The proposal endorses using OFDM technology in the physical (PHY)
layer of fixed wireless access systems below 11 GHz; the channel
characteristics associated with these frequencies favor OFDM as it
allows for very flexible deployments and high spectral efficiency.
OFDM based systems using the bands below 11 GHz won't suffer from
some of the restrictions of systems in the LMDS band, such as
short link distances, line-of-site requirements and antenna
limitations. Submission of this proposal by the OFDM Forum
completes the first step in working with the IEEE to set a
standard for fixed wireless systems below 11 GHz, a process that
will likely take upwards of six months.

"The submission prepared by the Fixed Wireless Access Working
Group represents a significant milestone for the OFDM Forum," said
Nico van Waes, Systems Engineer at Nokia and Chair of the OFDM
Forum's Fixed Wireless Access Working Group. "By submitting this
proposal, we have taken an important step towards interoperability
and harmonized standards." The proposal was prepared and is
endorsed by representatives from the following companies:

* Alcatel
* Ericsson
* 4G Network Technologies
* Intersil
* IoWave Inc.
* Ishoni Networks Ltd.
* Motorola
* nBand Communications
* Nokia
* Pacific Broadband Communications
* Sasken Communication Technologies
(formerly Silicon Automation Systems)
* Solectek Corporation
* SiWorks
* TIL-TEK Antennas
* Wi-LAN

By working together, these companies have demonstrated the
importance of OFDM technology to the future of the high-speed
wireless industry as well as the industry's commitment to
establishing a standard that will enable reduced costs to
implement, manufacture and sell wireless products for the consumer
market.

In addition to the Fixed Wireless Access group's submission, the
OFDM Forum's November meeting saw the realization of significant
milestones that both increase the organization's effectiveness and
help it achieve its mandate. The Wireless Road Access Working
Group has submitted an initial OFDM technology-based proposal to
the Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) committee for the
broadband wireless distribution of real-time road safety, traffic
management as well as a variety of commercial and private traveler
services.

The Wireless Road Access Working Group also expanded its existing
charter to include broadband mobile networks, a segment that is
seen to be in its infancy, following a vote by the organization's
principal members. This group's new name will be the Broadband
Mobile Wireless Working Group.

The OFDM Forum's Wireless LAN Working Group conducted a
comprehensive review of Motorola and Radiata's recent proposal on
OFDM-based HiperPANs for the IEEE's 5 GHz 802.15.3 standard and
announced its support of the proposal.

In general OFDM Forum business, the organization established a
special task force that will prepare a resolution for
contribution, review and discussion at the next meeting to be held
in February 2001. The resolution will look at 'Patent Disclosure
and Willingness to License' among OFDM Forum members.

The OFDM Forum has grown to include 46 members to date, 15 of
which are listed as Principal Members of the organization.

About OFDM

Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is a technology
that is considered to be the cornerstone of the next generation of
high-speed wireless data products and services for corporate and
consumer use. OFDM is also at the foundation of both the IEEE
802.11.a and ETSI BRAN HIPERLAN/2 standards and is used in
numerous multimedia applications.

About The OFDM Forum

The OFDM Forum is a market development association comprised of
hardware manufacturers, software firms, telecommunications
companies and other users interested in Orthogonal Frequency
Division Multiplexing (OFDM) technology in wireless applications.
Founded in December 1999, the OFDM Forum was established to
develop a single, compatible global standard for cost-effective,
high-speed wireless networks on a variety of devices. Founding
companies are as follows: Ericsson, Nokia, Philips Semiconductors,
Samsung Electro-Mechanics, Sony, Wi-LAN and the Testbed Center for
Interoperability at the University of California at Santa Barbara
(a division of CalTrans). The OFDM Forum has grown to include 46
members to date, 15 of which are listed as Principal Members of
the organization. More information on the OFDM Forum can be found
at www.ofdm-forum.com.

Organizations interested in joining the OFDM Forum are invited to
