The company added 501,200 subscribers in the quarter, bringing its total subscriber base to 3.1 million, including 2.3 million monthly subscribers and 748 thousand prepaid customers.

I just signed a contract with Voicestream. They are making a major move in the Northeast after the OmniPoint acquisition. I first looked at Voicestream in Circuit City, where the deal included a Nokia 5190 for $49.95 before the $50 rebate. Unfortunately, the rebate was due to expire that day and I wasn't ready to sign up. A Voicestream rep was there and told me the rebate was good for another week at Best Buy. A few days later I was ready to sign up, and went over to Best Buy to close the deal. I was waiting (and waiting...) for the Best Buy employee who was on the phone to come over and help me when a Voicestream regional rep walked in. He grabbed a form and started signing me up until he was finally able to snag a Best Buy employee to finish the job. While he was doing this the Sprint salesman, who was manning a deserted counter, came over and inquired about signing up for a Voicestream plan because it suited his needs better. I kid you not. After going over the plan with the Sprint salesman, the Voicestream rep gave him his card and a phone number and invited him to call about going to work for Voicestream.

I don't know if this company will ever make any money, but they're going to sell a lot of phones.

While going through some of VSTR's press releases, I came across this....

biz.yahoo.com

The agreement is a multi-year, multi-product commitment to launch various models of Samsung wireless Internet capable handsets using VoiceStream's all digital, national GSM network. The agreement will support VoiceStream's nationwide introduction of high-speed data applications using the GPRS system in 2001.

I had no idea that VSTR planned on implementing GPRS in 2001....it should be an interesting collision between 1xrtt and GPRS in the US. VSTR will definitely have the economic muscle behind them (DT) to make the contest interesting.

Curious as to your thoughts about the renewed speculation about US TDMA/iDEN operators switching to 1xrtt.....are you as sceptical as you have been in the past?
