The only measure of performance that really matters is the amount of time it takes to execute a given application.
Contrary to a popular misconception, it is not clock frequency (MHz) alone or the number of instructions executed per
clock (IPC) alone that equates to performance. True performance is a combination of both clock frequency (MHz) and
IPC:
Performance = MHz x IPC
This shows that the performance can be improved by increasing frequency, IPC or optimally both. It turns out that
frequency is a function of both the manufacturing process and the micro-architecture. At a given clock frequency, the
IPC is a function of processor micro-architecture and the specific application being executed. Although it is not always
feasible to improve both the frequency and the IPC, increasing one and holding the other close to constant with the prior
generation can still achieve a significantly higher level of performance.
In addition to the two methods of increasing performance described above, it is also possible to increase performance by
reducing the number of instructions that it takes to execute the specific task being measured. Single Instruction Multiple
Data (SIMD) is a technique used to accomplish this."

All this soi talk of 30 percent gains his nice but... anybody want talk how Mot's soi is treating Apple these days? aapl seems to be suffering from a severely negative boost to frequency (compared what MOT might have achieved by putting the same effort into conventional processes). So I guess this means one of two things for AMD:

a) AMD will be screwed by the high cost and delays of developing an soi process

b) or, appl being the sacrificial lamb, all the bugs will be exorcised by q3 01 and everything will go flawlessly

All I am saying is that K8 on soi is exciting but we shouldn't take execution for granted. Then again, even a delayed K-8 stands a chance of beating any useful variant of ia64 to market (of course, this assumes somebody will find McKinley in some way useful ;) "McKinley, will have its own pilot launch beginning in Q4 2001/Q1 2002. Justs adds more fodder to the contention that with the Athy core, evolutionary products will "nix" competitors in all spaces in which AMD chooses to compete...If there is any merit to this latest revelation, then that AMD snowball at the top of the mountain looks like its gaining both size and velocity at an alarming rate when viewed by its competitors who continue unwaveringly but failingly in their attempts to compete with this new champion, the Athy!!!...
