Philips Electronics may spend
$700 million on third Thai plant
BANGKOK -- Royal Philips Electronics N.V., Europe's No. 1 maker of consumer electronics, plans to spend $700 million to build a new plant in Thailand, The Nation reported.

Philips, which now makes semiconductor and lighting products at its two Thai plants, aims to boost overseas shipments from Thailand by 25% to $1 billion by the end of next year, the paper reported. Construction of the new plant is pending final approval from Board of Investment, the government's investment promotion agency. The company declined to say what the plant will make.

Philips last week said it began work on a new $100 million plant in Shanghai to make components used in computer compact disk drives.
