Folks,
I think a discussion on the relative performance of Seagate vs. Maxtor, HDD, IBM, and WDC would be fruitful.
I recently revisted a paper on Vertical Manufacturing and Wintelism and found it to be an excellent tool for reorganizing my thoughts on the disk drive industry and the pc industry.

THEORY:
The year 2000 has demonstrated the superiority of the vertical manufacturing model for the disk drive industry and will continue to be the superior model for the foreseeable future.

If true, and since Seagate will not be "investable" near term, what steps can or should Maxtor/HDD and WDC take to insure a unconstrained flow of quality components? What about IBM and it's considerable resources/abilities as a component supplier? Texas Instruments? Lucent?
I don't think there is any doubt that unit demand for disk drives will continue growing at least double digits/year. What can Maxtor/HDD do now to insure they can meet future demand and make a profit?
