>So would anyone like to tell me whats fair and why?

I think people who argue for progessive taxes are full of crap. Why don't we start charging rich people what they "can afford" for basic food items. Bill Gates could certainly afford to pay 10 thousand dollars for a loaf of bread, so we should charge him that much. When he fills up his limo, let's charge him 5 thousand dollars per gallon.

And when he goes to Burger King, why shouldn't he pay 4 thousand bucks for a Whopper, since he can afford it?

Slipperly slope. At least with Shrub in the whitehouse, we'll get rid of the insane estate (death) tax. A leftover from the rockefeller days, it's nothing more than an attempt by government to prevent wealthy dynasties from forming that might usurp their power.

Dale, I think that we are pretty close to fair right now. The republican "supply side" tax cuts under Reagan had a top rate of what, 36%? Compare that to our current 39.6%. In spite of all the Republican cries of high taxes, Clinton is following a supply side agenda (plus "read my lips"): thats what "its the economy, stupid" boiled down to. Triangulation works, the rising tide has lifted a lot of boats. As to "the top 1% are already paying 30 40 50%", where does that sound bite come from? Sounds like "fuzzy math", which is it, 30, 40 or 50%? How much income does that 1% control? 30, 40, 50%?
As far as Animal Farm, remember "all animals are created equal, but some are more equal than others" is like "he who has the gold, rules" and republicans are the party with the gold. The pigs were capitalists, not socialists.....

A good economy is a boon to all income strata. The last nearly 20 years should be proof of that. The economy's impact goes far beyond what any social programs have been able to accomplish. The historically high effective rate of income taxation is beginning to be a drag on the economy. For the economy to produce wealth at the maximum we need the lowest possible income taxes. Everyone benefits - and benefits big time.

I'll tell you what's fair, and would have insured the republicans the house, senate, and presidency but they blew it:

Some Republican wonk should figure out how high the "zero tax bracket" can be raised to effect the same dollar tax cut that they wanted and do it... example: "No family making 40K or less will even have to FILE for a tax return".

Then if they can afford something for the other brackets fine.

DAK

fair to me = identical percentages of salary paid by everyone, rich or poor

since most voters in this country couldn't tell you what 39% of 100 is, they will never understand what is fair or not, they just think it's unfair that others can have something they don't

BTW, if I pay more taxes than someone % wise, I should get more votes
