The free "phone-to-phone" feature of iDEN requires a repeater in the area. They can't function as walkie-talkies.

I looked for something on CDMA group calling (like NexTel) and all I found was conference calling limited to a total of three parties. Is anyone aware of any CDMA service like NexTel's? I assume there is no technical reason to prevent it, BWDIK?

What do you mean? Sprint and Verizon both have free mobile to mobile options. In fact with Sprint, if you also choose the long distance option then the mobile to mobile minutes include long distance as well. So, if you have a buddy in NY with a Sprint phone, you can call him for free from SD. I believe Sprint limits the mobile to mobile minutes to 500 per month.
