There can be a 269-269 tie since there are 538 total electoral votes. Unlikely, but there are about a half dozen ways it can happen considering the states that are firmly in both candidates camps.

Also, in Maine (anywhere else?) they can choose to cast their electoral votes in proportion to the popular vote. If Nader can snag a vote or two, that could mean neither Bush nor Gore may get 270 even without an outright tie.

These are all very unlikely scenarios. Someone will probably get the 270, but that doesn't mean a tie isn't possible. It is.
