There could be several possible reasons for allocating the first .13mu wafers to PIII+ production. If Intel expects that the .18mu P4 will keep AMD at bay in desktops, it seems appropriate to use initial .13mu production to target a different area. AMD may have some decent mobile offerings at that point, making that a good, high-margin segment to target.

IIRC, Intel's .18mu also started life in the mobile segment.

Your final point, however, still stands. It is interesting that McKinley (a.k.a. The Real Itanium) is being delayed.

What was the old launch date and what is the new one? Is there some official info confirming this, other than post on Ace's?

I was under the impression that McKinley would be .18u initially.
