hominids... They were doing okay ..
No, they were in trouble. Starting about 3 million years ago the big continents were breaking up and the weather was changing. The great tropical rainforests shrank as ice ages expanded. The poor chimps of the forest had to struggle with shrinking forest and expanding grasslands. Some were pushed out of the forest.

Actually it's a fairly long story of repeated ice ages followed by better times. Almost each change was accompanied by more and different hominids. The hominid homo-sapien appeared about a million and a half years ago. About a million years ago changes wiped out nearly all hominids. Homo Sapiens were reduced to 10,000 individuals.
