Pravin, I think AMD is down today because of the Cisco building up a couple of months worth of inventory for key components (chips of course) information that came out of Cisco's CC yesterday. Check the SOXX: down 4.93% at 3:05 (delayed a bit).

This is probably why AMD is down today.

Pravin,

you are giving too much credit to the market. BTW, Intel also down. More likely the combination of semi index + Transmeta news.

<Pravin: Intel's new 0.13u process could easily be its savior.>

Equipment makers have previously stated that they won't be able to deliver the 193nm tools in quantity until late 2001 early 2002. AMD wouldn't have the same problem, since they are (apperently) going to reach virtually the same feature size using phase-shifting and optical proximity correction with their (already installed) 248nm tools.

Of course, it may be that Intel has "cornered the market" on the 193nm tools and that the above statement only applies to everyone else.

Sorry for the lack of link... maybe someone else can provide one?

Pravin, There are risks in looking forward a year or two. As Fyodor says, what if intel has booked all the 193NM tools 'til 2001-2, leaving AMD with the phase shift method for .13.
Possibly phase shift with 193NM will give even smaller feature sizes?
Then again AMD might be able to leap a cycle and use the next smaller equipment if the 248 will serve for .13.
I see some of the Intel features will be 0.07 NM.
At what point do we reach the limits in feature size, with regards to stray alphas, electron channel wear etc? At 0.07 we must be getting close to some limts?
