direct competition between simians and humans,
Turn back the clock 3 million years and the competition was not between simians and humans, it was between simians are nearly identical similans who just happened to live at the forest edge, or happened to taller or perhaps slower than their cousins. It wasn't until some got kicked out of the forest that they underwent the survive or die kind of pressure that transforms one species into a new one.

Once they formed separate breeding populations then there would be a variety of pressures, seeing over the grass, new disease, new predators, grass fires. It wasn't just one steady thing. There were also new wideopen spaces to occupy with foodstufs that had not yet learned to protect itself as skillfully as it would later.

To stand upright
It would appear that standing had a lot to do with the shortening of the gut of the early homo animals. This was made possible by a more digestible diet of meat. The Lucy fossils indicate that upright stance preceeded large brains.
