Change is constant and needs no cause.
Genetic drift is countered by the digital nature of DNA and the corrective action of sexual DNA pairing during reproduction. Novel genes will be diluted to resessive status so long as there is signifigant gene flow (bridges, or other contact). It is only through isolation that a new "norm" can take hold in the gene pool, and it is selection events which tailor that norm.

IMHO - Darwin was wrong on the gradual change portions of natural selection and punctuated equilibrium is clearly the better explanation.
