[Good News!!!] Legerity Demonstrates Revolutionary Integrated Circuit Technology That Fully Integrates ADSL With Voice
Breakthrough in Broadband Semiconductors Will Reduce Cost, Board Space and Power Requirements of Full-Rate ADSL and Eliminate Splitters in the Network
AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 13, 2000-- Legerity, Inc., a leading communication integrated circuit (IC) provider for data and voice networks, today announced that it has demonstrated revolutionary IC technology that will deliver full-rate ADSL and carrier-class voice services simultaneously over the same twisted pair. Using Legerity's proprietary high-voltage, wide-bandwidth process, the new technology will significantly reduce the system-level cost and complexity of ADSL equipment by increasing board density and eliminating voice splitters in the network. Forthcoming Legerity chipsets based on this new technology are planned to be available next year, helping to make fully integrated data and voice communications as affordable and widespread as ``plain old telephone service'' (POTS).

``Legerity's mission is to deliver silicon solutions that make fully integrated, high-speed data and voice available to everyone,'' said Daryl White, president and chief financial officer of Legerity. ``The semiconductor technology that Legerity announced today has the power to shift the competitive landscape and level the playing field for telecom and datacom companies, allowing voice service providers to add data to their offerings, while delivering voice capability to data providers. We believe the advent of integrated data and voice linecards based on Legerity technology will drive universal acceptance of full-rate ADSL communications in the home and office.''

Current full-rate ADSL systems use separate voice and data line interfaces, coupled through separate POTS splitters. Legerity's revolutionary approach will eliminate these costly and space-consuming splitters, resulting in smaller, denser, lower-cost ADSL linecard designs that can be more easily and cost-effectively retrofitted into existing Central Offices (COs) and Digital Loop Carriers (DLCs) that have very restricted space. Today there are nearly one billion CO/DLC-based voice-only lines worldwide. Legerity's forthcoming chipset solution will potentially transform each of these lines into a splitterless broadband line that handles high-speed data and voice simultaneously.

``Legerity's integrated data+voice technology will be one of the most far-reaching innovations in the broadband industry to be introduced in 2001,'' said Russ Apfel, chief technology officer at Legerity. ``Leveraging our existing portfolio of more than 600 patents, as well as 20 new patent applications underway, our new technology will bring system-level intelligence, higher integration, dramatic board space savings, and significant cost reductions to communications equipment manufacturers -- and ultimately to consumers and businesses -- in a rapidly evolving broadband market that desperately needs these types of benefits.''

``As competition in the local loop increases, operators are demanding new network architectures to deliver high-speed data services, reduce costs, increase card density and minimize power requirements. At the same time, the network backbone is evolving from switched to packet, and these developments create a dynamic market requirement for new communications equipment to drive the convergence of data and voice. Legerity's integrated data+voice solution exemplifies the enabling technology that the broadband market needs to help ADSL reach its full potential,'' said Fred Zieber, president of Pathfinder Research, an analyst firm based in San Jose, California.

Legerity's forthcoming integrated data+voice chipset solution will feature an integrated subscriber line architecture that combines 16 voice subscriber lines with 16 ADSL modems. This first-of-its-kind, high-density design will give communication equipment manufacturers the flexibility to implement multiport ADSL linecards, ranging from four to 16 lines, for data-only and integrated data+voice applications. Full software programmability will enable equipment providers to offer a single, low-cost voice and full-rate ADSL linecard design for multiple country applications.
