<Bill: What lies on the horizon for computing after we hit the wall? Quantum computing? optical?>

There are lots of interesting things on the map. Quantum computing is certainly one (using a superposition of states (termed qubit) instead of the binary bit), but there are others.

Massively parallel computing, for example, contains many interesting aspects. This type is also sometimes referred to as "organic" computing.

There are many EXTREMELY interesting physical aspects - questions of locality, currently being investigated by (quasi-) crystal growth.

Then there's all the stuff that we can't even begin to imagine - I'm sure there's plenty ;).
