represume one is not innocent if one is in prison Really? You haven't read about the scandals in the Los Angeles and New York police depts where police have reported other police have falsified evidence? And this is just the tip as most will stick together and NOT tell on each other. Freeus Thousands of cases thrown out and people released because falsified evidence means case has to be retried, etc etc. I heard a discussion in a hospital cafeteria once among some police: they were saying how they'd "planted" evidence to be sure the person was convicted because they "knew" he was the "criminal type".
