Siemems thinks its now #3, beating out ERICY, excerpt:

The company said it had caught up with Swedish rival Ericsson in its race to become the global number three producer of mobile phones, a claim Ericsson immediately disputed.

Siemens said it now had a market share of nine percent, equalling Ericsson but still behind Nokia Oyj and Motorola Inc (NYSE:MOT - news).

It said handset sales totalled 24 million in its 1999/2000 business year, below its own target of 25-30 million because of component shortages.

The German group, which on Tuesday agreed to develop next-generation mobile phones with Japan's Toshiba Corp , said it was sticking to its sales target of 60 million handsets for the current year.
