Accounting Firms Wary of SEC Plan to Split Auditing,
Consulting Services

A proposed SEC regulation may force accounting firms to
stop doing consulting work for their clients in the name
of eliminating potential conflicts of interest. While
the proposal would apply only to firms serving publicly
traded companies, smaller firms worry that state regulators
may also adopt rules to split accounting and consulting
services.

The rationale: if a firm is doing substantial consulting
work for a company, it won't want to jeopardize future
paychecks by delivering an unfavorable audit.
