COMDEX and EDS Create First Metropolitan Area Network For COMDEX/Fall
EDS-COMDEX Network Signals Show's Move into the Services Sector of the Digital Economy
LOS ANGELES, and PLANO, Texas, Nov. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Key3Media Group, Inc. (NYSE: KME - news) and EDS (NYSE: EDS - news) today announced the creation of the world's largest temporary metropolitan area network (MAN) servicing all buyers and sellers at COMDEX/Fall 2000 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The network, which will connect more than 2,200 exhibitors and all five conference venues, will go live at COMDEX/Fall, November 13-17, 2000. The network will connect COMDEX venues including the Las Vegas Convention Center, Las Vegas Hilton, Sands Exposition and Convention Center, Venetian Hotel and MGM Grand Conference Center.

``COMDEX has collaborated with EDS to signal a growing focus at the show on the services community, and to enhance the level of service provided to COMDEX participants,'' said Bill Sell, vice president and general manager, Key3Media Events. ``Services companies enhance the incredible hardware and software innovations available today -- services enable companies to compete effectively.''

In addition to connecting all aspects of COMDEX/Fall 2000, the network will provide the buyers, media and analysts visiting the show reliable, secure and fast Internet connections. The network also offers exhibitors a cost- effective alternative to traditional Internet drops. The network will enable exhibitors to showcase network-based technology such as optical networks, Storage Area Networks (SANs), Voice over IP and streaming multimedia through a single high-performance network. EDS and its technology services and products teams -- Nortel Networks, EMC and Hewlett-Packard -- created a MAN with massive bandwidth that is reliable, flexible for supporting new applications and services, and affordable.

The MAN team assembled and tested the thousands of components and miles of fiber cabling at a staging center in California. Over the next five days the network will be rebuilt and installed in Las Vegas. Once re-assembled, the network solution will service more than 2,200 companies placing rigorous demands on the systems as they showcase their wares at the world's largest and most influential information technology event.

``The EDS-COMDEX Network exemplifies the innovative ideas, answers, services and benefits EDS provides to thousands of business clients around the world every day. We look forward to working with COMDEX, Nortel Networks, EMC and HP to provide a new level of customer service for the exhibitors and participants,'' said Terry Milholland, senior vice president, CIO and CTO of EDS.

EDS Chairman and CEO Dick Brown will deliver a Wednesday morning keynote address at the show this year, the first address in show history by a services sector leader, and for the first time, EDS will have a major presence at the show.

Joe W., This one isn't too surprising to me...good for data centers. Only 3% of CSCO revenue is optics( so I read somewhere). They needed to do something...
Cisco, Corning Form Equipment Alliance

By Timna Tanners

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Fiber optic equipment maker Corning Inc. (GLW.N) said on Tuesday it had joined forces with Cisco Systems Inc. (CSCO.O) to make optical equipment for the Internet merging the strengths of the two industry leaders.

Financial analysts said the companies had been talking for some time about making products that combine Corning's optical fiber with Cisco's leading position in providing Internet Protocol (IP) networks.

The alliance, coupled with a general rise in tech stocks after weeks of being battered, helped send the shares of both companies higher, analysts said.

In addition, ABN AMRO analyst Dave Kang started coverage of Corning with a buy rating and a 12-month price target of $114.

Corning, which controls about half the world market for fiber optic cable, rose $5-1/2 or 9 percent to $64-1/2 on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). More than 5.8 million shares were traded in midday NYSE activity, making it one of the most heavily traded issues.

San Jose, Calif.-based Cisco was up $1-3/4 at $52-1/8 on the Nasdaq market, where it was the third most traded issue.

Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

"Corning's expertise in optical fiber and photonic products, coupled with Cisco's expertise in building IP-based networks is a powerful combination that will enable service providers to deliver rich new services." said Mike Volpi, chief strategy officer at Cisco Systems.

BOTH COMPANIES INTERESTED IN CLOSER RELATIONSHIP

Both companies had previously indicated they were interested in a closer relationship, analysts said.

"This is more a formalization of something that had been coming together," First Union Securities analyst Stephen Koffler said.

He noted that the joint venture, which is nonexclusive

had not necessarily been factored into the companies' stock prices.

Hints of a closer relationship with Cisco came from Corning's recent acquisition of the Optical Technologies unit of Pirelli (PECI.MI), the Italian tire and cable maker which was a supplier to Cisco.

"Once the Pirelli transaction is closed, the relationship with Cisco should increase for the optical systems Cisco makes with optical fiber by Corning," said Lawrence Harris with Josephthal & Co. Inc., who has a buy recommendation on Corning and a 12-month $135 price target.

As part of the deal, Corning will package its fiber optic equipment with Cisco's gear for networks based on Internet Protocol, which breaks data into packets for transmission.

Cisco and Corning will form teams to develop the gear. Corning said the ready-made equipment would cut the time and cost Internet service providers needed to install it.

Corning invented fiber optic cable, the lightning-fast equipment that is the nervous system of modern telecommunications.
