The StarOffice spreadsheet works almost identically to Excel, and can import and export Excel files with no loss of anything.

Opening excel spreadsheets:

I came across a free download that supposedly will read and write *.xls files: sphygmic.com

I can't make it work, but maybe someone else can. This might be a way to avoid downloading more money to Redmond.
