I can answer your question, sort of. I used to shoot process camera for a living. Good money at the time, $20 an hour in 1980. We used nothing but Kodak for graphic arts film. Very glad I got out of the business. It's all digital now.

Silver halide is still the technology of choice for x-rays, even CT scans and sonograms. Recycling silver from developing (fixing, really) and film makes sense when silver is expensive, and EPA controls tip the cost-benefit analysis in favor of recovery and recyling.
