Stock Rally on Hold As Election in Doubt

Nov 8 4:18am ET

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Wall Street expectations of a short-term market rally on Republican George W. Bush's projected election win were dampened in the early hours Wednesday after the result in the tight presidential race appeared to be in doubt.

U.S. stock futures surged after Bush was declared the winner in television reports, but lost earlier gains when Vice President Al Gore retracted his concession of defeat amid confusion about the result in the key state of Florida.

``Markets like certainty and until we have a clear outcome, everyone is back in waiting mode,'' said Edward Gale, director of London-based brokerage Jeffries International Ltd.

Bush's plans for tax cuts, less government regulation of prescription drug prices and healthcare, and a more relaxed approach to anti-trust probes into the U.S. merger boom should boost the stock market if the television networks' projection of a Bush victory stands, experts said.

Nasdaq 100 December futures were up 1 to 3315; Dow industrials futures were up 47 to 11,080, and the Standard & Poor's 500 December futures rose 1.5 to 1445.5.
