after listening to an analysis of the electoral college last night i am not so sure it is bad - the historical reasons for its existence are significant (like how the hell else were they going to collect the vote from such a wild and woolly nation) but there are (from what I can tell) only two compelling reasons to keep the electoral college today - one is historical:

the historical reason is that the framers of the constitution - those guys whose intent the strict interpreters of the Constitution want to stick to - DID NOT want a system of direct participation in government - they wanted a REPRESENTATIVE DEMOCRACY - different breed than a "pure" democracy.

the other reason is that with an electoral college the candidates must acknowledge the significance of every single state - instead of just focusing on the urban centers - why else would a candidate every go to West Virginia or North Dakota or even Nebraska.

Getting rid of the electoral college would have much larger repercussions than we've imagined - might be the right thing to do, but given this country's short history and appreciation of tradition, I doubt it would get passed.

Jill! I was thinking that the electoral college system was stupid like "Who ever???" After thinking about it I can not believe our fore fathers came up with something so fair for ALL Americans.

If we did not have the electoral college system candidates would never touch the states or cities with a few popular votes. They would carry their campaign to NY, LA, MIA, etc. in order to carry the popular votes. Also can you imagine the president or congress giving anything to states, cities will only a few popular votes.

After thinking about this, there is no other way. I think the news reporters in the next ten days should explain the electoral vote process so as all Americans have and opportunity to understand this process.

No matter who wins I think this is the only fair system for all concerned.

Geez! If only we had men today as smart and with foresight such as our fore fathers

PS...after posting I just read Abstract's explanation and I think we are saying the same thing.
