Winbond to postpone building of 12-inch wafer foundry plants

Taipei, Nov. 14, 2000 (CENS)--Winbond Electronics Corp. said Tuesday that the firm decided to shelve the establishment of its two new 12-inch wafer foundry plants due to fund-raising difficulty and the unclear price picture in DRAM products recently.

Winbond will reduce the number of its two 12-inch wafer foundry plants to only one. The firm will also conduct relevant investment reviews and delay the establishment schedule soon.

It is expected that Taiwan's DRAM technology will still stay on 8-inch wafer foundry plants for the manufacture of 0.175 micron-based products within two years. Taiwanese DRAM manufacturers will be comparatively weaker in competition with their counterparts in both Japan and South Korea accordingly.

Both Nan Ya Technology Corp. and Vanguard International Semiconductor Corp. also announced to delay the establishment of their 12-inch wafer foundry plants recently. Mosel Vitelic Inc. has not yet finalized the establishment site of its 12-inch wafer foundry plant to be built overseas.

One thing worth mentioning is that the price of locally-made DRAM products reached about US$5 per unit for the time being. If Taiwanese DRAM manufacturers are unable to set up their new 12-inch wafer foundry plants in 2001 and enter the mass production in 2003 as scheduled, most local manufacturers in the line will not have the opportunity to obtain new orders from international major DRAM manufacturers on an OEM (original equipment manufacturer) basis in the future.

Chang Chih-yuan, spokesman of Winbond, said that the firm estimates its new 12-inch wafer foundry will produce 40,000 DRAMs per month. The firm will postpone the establishment of its new 12-inch wafer foundry till the first quarter of 2001, Chang said.
