I remember seeing a government film about the dangers of marijuana.. it featured unsavory looking mexicans lighting up and going crazy, and whenever the film narrator said the word 'Marijuana' he pronounced it with a ridiculous latin accent.

Re: cocaine in Coke. While that is true, I don't think it started out intentionally, like the patent medicines of the time, laudanum (opium) comes to mind. As I recall from an economics class, Coke was a perfect example of how a worthless by-product could find unexpected and profitable uses. It was from some production process I forget, now.
