I believe it was that the popular vote wasn't completely trusted and the writers of the constitution thought that the electors could vote for someone else if the people had made a really stupid choice.

That's right...I looked it up and then edited my original post. At the time, Americans had little experience with democracy so they provided a back up.....to ensure a smooth transition from British rule to home rule.

BTW the markets are not happy with the lack of results in the presidential election...both markets are down as I type this.
