bosquedog, In national ratings, Texas rates 49th, something Gore emphasized often during the campaign. Bush, on the other hand, emphasized he had taken the state from 49th minus to 49th plus. Or, as the great political question and answer in Texas goes:

"Sir, Texas rates 49th in quality of public education, 49th in children with medical coverage, and 49th in anti-pollution efforts (it's really 48th, as Louisiana had to get in there somewhere). What do you say to that?"

"Suh, I say thank God for Mississippi." <g>
