Rio Tinto takes majority share of Ashton

Mining giant Rio Tinto has announced it has acquired more than 50 per cent of takeover target Ashton mining.

Rio is in a takeover battle for Ashton against South African diamond company De Beers, and early this week increased its offer from $1.85 to $2.20 a share.

Rio has this evening announced it has 50.36 of the diamond producer.

The takeover offer remains open until the November 27.

Before the announcement, Rio shares closed up by 16 cents to $27.40 and Ashton shares were up 1 cent to $2.24.
