Re:"It has happened before, it didn't take years."

Assume that Bush wins Florida and Oregon. A reversal of 10 Bush electoral votes would give the electoral vote to Gore. If Gore wins Oregon, then a change of only 3 votes - a single state - would turn the election for Gore.

You can almost guarantee that there will be legal challenges in states narrowly won by Bush, including FL. If only 10 votes or maybe only 3 votes are tied up in a legal challenge, there is NO WINNER in the electoral college.

On the other hand, if Bush looses FL by a narrow margin he will almost certainly mount a legal challenge.

It is not hard to imagine a legal proceeding that takes longer than 2 1/2 months.

This would be a really ugly scenario.

Willcousa - re: 'It has happened before, it didn't take years. This will be the fourth election decided by the electoral college I beleive. '

Excuse me?

I may be a little rusty in my civics, but EVERY U.S. PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION is decided by the electoral college.

It is usually a non-event because of the generally clear cut margins of victory.

This time, the way the votes fell, the significance of our Constitutionallly mandated electoral system becomes highlighted to the n'th degree.
