Bush will enter the presidency with a different "calling" than did Clinton and his plurality win. Just this afternoon Bush was saying (a) he will win Florida (and I expect he will); and (b) he will attempt to reach out to the people who voted against him.

Psychologically, Clinton entered the presidency in '92 as top dog, even though he only won a plurality of the vote. Bush will be dogged at least through the early years of his presidency by the fact that he won the states but not the people.

No doubt DeLay, Lott, Armey and the other GOP attack-dog congressmen ("ruff, ruff") will try to take advantage of this weak presidency by controlling the national legislative agenda.

In addition, McCain has stated he will tie up the Senate in January until campaign financing reform comes about.

In fact, it appears that Bush will first have to attend to intra-party matters before he concerns himself with the Loyal Opposition. He is in a most difficult situation. I wish him well, because the alternative (a country ruled by the likes of DeLay and Armey) is far worse.
