USA special in this regard, i agree. The process is whats most important to us. I think the gridlock this time could be more effective than the clinton/gingrich variety. Bush reaches out to democrats in texas and gore is a legislator by trade and has made many horsetrades i am sure. So we could have "effective" gridlock without the acrimony and a few key things like drug benefits, bipartisan social securtity plan, bi-p tax cut etc. etc.

The electoral college was designed for an age when a person's word was generally his bond. I imagine only upstanding people were appointed as electors. Times have changed.
