It might take your ISP up to a week to point to the right place, IF you are in North America.

If that is true then whoever is doing the hosting for you is incompetent at managing DNS servers. The proper way to handle such IP address changes is to decrease expiration settings for the DNS records well in advance so that by the time the switch is made you don't have other DNS servers all over the world cache and serve invalid records for days or even weeks.
