The sharp growth and record revenues underscore the semiconductor industry's movement to third-party wafer fabrication services. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. has reported its sales grew 127.4% in the first three quarters of this year to $3.51 billion (NT$112.4 billion) vs. $1.54 billion (NT$49.4 billion) in 1999. During September, TSMC's revenues jumped 168.4% to $510 million (NT$16.4 billion) compared to just $190 million (NT$6.1 billion) in September 1999. TSMC's September sales were 2% higher than $500 million ($NT16.1 billion) in August. Meanwhile, United Microelectronics Corp.--the industry's second largest pure-play silicon foundry company--reported sales of $2.3 billion (NT$73.2 billion) in the first three months of 2000, an increase of 253.8% from $650 million (NT$20.7 billion) in the same period last year. UMC's sales in September rocketed 365.6% to $320 million (NT$10.3 billion) compared to just $70 million (NT$2.2 billion) in September 1999, according to the company's most recent report.
