Increase in the unskilled drivers and less attention to application and maintenance by owners.

Tires rarely go flat anymore and people just forget about them, including checking the pressure. Low pressure is a killer due to heat increase and stress. So if a tire fails today, people think it is a big unusual deal unless they ran over a box of nails or somesuch.

I remember my Dad would always check the tires before going on just a hundred mile trip to the lake and I learned how to change a tire by age 6. -g-
