I think the ballot issue is incomprehensibly sad. Law suit or not I can, unfortunately, see no way that the results can be changed. Record can show who actually voted but to let these people vote again opens a stinky can of worms.

Can you imagine being Gore and going through all of this only to lose because a ballot was poorly designed and without malicious intent? And if by some miracle Gore gets FL we could have a similar situation here in WI.

OT Let's put it this way: it was a lot more confusing than a single column ballot. My wife complained to me about the ballot very early on Tuesday morning right after she voted. She also helped a Hispanic gentleman next to her vote. He wanted to vote for Gore and was not certain where to punch.

I am convinced that a lot of votes intended for Gore went to Buchanan instead. Buchanan's percentage in Palm Beach county (0.79%)was above his overall state percentage, even though PB county is heavily Democratic compared to the rest of the state (Bush: 35%, Gore: 62%). Buchanan got 3400 votes. In Broward county which is just south of PB and votes similarly to PB (Bush: 30%, Gore: 67%), Buchanan got 0.14% of the vote. A similar percentage in PB county would have given Buchanan 600 votes -- with the other 2800 presumably going to Gore, giving Gore a majority of 1000 votes in Florida, assuming that other irregularities and errors throughout the state cancel out. So, I think the wrong man will go to the White House in January -- assuming Bush goes.

Having said all this, I doubt that there is legal basis for challenging the results. These so called butterfly ballots are routine in other states. It's just that they were used for the first time in PB county and voters (many of them elderly with poor eyesight) were confused.
