But, in the short and medium term, at least, it will be difficult for clecs to justify rolling out fiber into neighborhoods where they stand only to gain a portion of a fragmented market, as they'll have to compete against the incumbent "souped up" copper, cable and possibly fixed wireless. Oh, yeah, and Ka-band satellite. Where you can justify distributing cable if you foresee 50% acceptance by the houses passed, it's a lot harder to justify the investment if you foresee only 20% penetration.

One conclusion, I think, it that DSL will have a longer, rather than shorter, life because of the time it will take for fiber to extend its reach into the DSL-capable neighborhoods.
