dbf,

I thought all big events were scheduled around prime time. I missed the moon landing in 1969 because I was in England, and they arranged it for prime time US television.

Too much money involved to let polls interfere with prime time declarations of the winner. The networks panicked as prime time ran thin, and declared the winner (incorrectly) twice, to avoid the disastrous specter of their audience turning off the TV without a grande finale.
