I think that absentee ballots should require an effort to obtain, that will suffice.....You are not getting the spirit of the thing. There seems to be this pervasive phillistinism, that cannot appreciate the ceremonial and solemnizing nature of ritual. Precisely because voting is a sacred right that should be exercised with due seriousness, it should require one to make a commitment to ensure one's participation, and it is preferable to participate in the communal ritual of going to the polling place. It should not be taken for granted or exercised lightly....
