If the plurality for Bush is still less than 2500 I foresee a major constitutional crisis. Gore might back down in the interest of national unity, but I doubt it. He would push for a second election in Florida. The Republicans would challenge that idea because, obviously, no one would vote for Nader (or Buchanan for that matter). I'm not really sure who would blink first.

I don't think its a given that Gore would win a re-election, but it is probably likely. The Republicans would probably rather let the courts decide. They would argue that, if voters were confused, they could have and should have asked for assistance at the polling site, and it's their own fault if they didn't.

The matter would quickly rise to the Florida Supreme Court which would have to decide on either a new Florida election or letting the vote tally stand.

Petz,

I would be very surprised if it got to the courts...however if it did, would it be a state court or a US court? I would think it would be the latter and that the court would not call for an election but give it to Gore since he won the popular vote. I heard them discussing it on the news today but I am unclear as to all the legalities involved. Like you say, I guess it could turn into a real mess...but I really don't expect that.

I think you voted for Bush...so let me say first, all flaming aside, I was surprised that Bush was so adament today about his position.....that he had won, that Gore had reneged on his concession and that he was getting people and things together to transition into the White House. I would not mind that, in fact, he was doing all that but I think it was unnecessary to announce it. I know this has got to be difficult for both of them, but its times like these when you want your president to have it together....and to stay cool.

Edit. Someone in a Rome cafe today said when they heard about the American election debacle, "Its like Italy!". I guess we are in more trouble then I thought. LOL

Petz,

there was a discussion about the number of Buchanan Ballots:

Subject 28880
(well somewhere in that endless thread)
They mentioned that Buchanan received I believe 8,000 votes there when he ran in the past in the primaries, and that the county has a fairly heavy concentration of people who are registered under reform reform party - some 18,000 I believe.

As far as having second election in Florida, it's absurd. You will always find some "irregularities". There is never a perfect election. I know John Doe didn't get to the polling place because his car was in the shop and wants new election day, and Jane Doe forgot her reading glasses at home and now she is not sure if she wants to vote again just to make sure she voted for her candidate, and Joe Sixpack is a little blurry about the whole election thing because he had one too many drinks. He wants to vote again.

Maybe we should stop having elections. What's the point of having elections if you can't have perfect election? I hear that Augusto Pinochet needs a job. Maybe we should hire him to run the country.

Or maybe we should just forget about the whole participation of the population and just have the lawyers of each side to fight out the election in the court. Wait, Gore has all the trial lawyers in his packet (or the other way around). Let's just fight it out with guns like they do in third world. Bush has more gun owning supporters.

RE:"ted, based on my analysis of the 3407 votes cast for Buchanan in Palm Beach county, probably 2000 to 2500 of them were cast by error."

I recall Buchanon getting about 2700 in the primary so maybe there are that many Buchanon voters here...

BTW,
In the Palm Beach County recount, Gore made up 643 votes.
More than any other county so far. This looks extremely suspicious.
