In '64, about the only state Goldwater carried was Arizona. I agree that losing Tenn & Arkansas shows what the home folks think of their own.

Well, it isn't so rare for a candidate not to carry his home state. McGovern, for example, didn't carry his (South Dakota?).

The winner, though, almost always carries his home state. The last not to do that is James K. Polk, I think. If Gore wins, that would indeed be unusual.
