Thanks for an important post Doug. It certainly confirms my apprehensions.

As someone with a strong background in History, have to agree that a full implementation of Gore Plan B or C would be reminiscent of the declining days of the Roman Republic. In those days Caesar stood on the Rubicon with legions of soldiers. Now, it's dozens of partisan democrat lawyers descending on Florida which, as you point out, may quite possibly turn into a de facto attempt to overthrow the results of a duly conducted election in Florida. And with biased TV networks behind this regime, the public might be led down the primrose path to a true constitutional crisis.

We have had laws in place for years to deal with very close elections and they are being followed. An unwillingness to accept the result by Gore by pursuing an extended court challenge of a ballot pre-approved by the Democrats; or worse, trying to turn electors away from their appointed task would be a new and dangerous development in the win at any cost philosophy that has characterized this regime for 8 years. Can only hope our Constitution will withstand the lust for power of a politician whose selfish actions could put it at risk.

I hope everyone reads your post. Thanks

Isopatch

Love the analogy to Republican Rome, Doug. Re. the ABC plan, I would put nothing - NOTHING past you know who.

OT -

Douglas -

Didn't I read a position paper from an academic from the Gore camp a week before the election on this exact topic? It clearly defended the need for and relevance of the Electoral College, actually its preeminent role. And the piece downplayed the importance of the general results.

How does one go about reversing one's position when it is in print? Does the Gore camp explain that its previous stand only applied to the "elitist" GOP and not the people's party?

What a farce. Nader looks more prescient with each revelation of the antiquated, shoddy state of the election process. In Maine, we do not need to present ID to vote! (I could not use a check at a store without ID.) Just walk in and say "Yes, I am John Doe" and vote - go back to a different clerk and repeat. Hit all the polling stations in the area - read the obituaries for recent deaths - use those names.

This should be outsourced - the government can not be trusted with such a vital part of our lives. Get a big 5 accounting firm.

Plan B launching:

reuters.com

Anybody remember "Plan 9 from Outer Space"? You know, the B movie that was so bad it was funny? :o}}}}}}}}}}

Ok so Demos now want a hand count of 4 (that's right Virginia - FOUR) Florida counties. This is going to take a loooooooooooooooooooooooong time. Hey I know, Republicans could demand a hand count of Pappa Daley's Zombie Brigade during the '60's Kennedy/Nixon election. Hey that would make Tricky Dick the first dead guy elected president. Hey why not put in some real stiffs for a change. Now c'mon my Democrat friends, it's only fair that Julie Nixon becomes President now isn't it? I mean fair is fair after all.
