Surf''''s Multi-access Pool(TM)(SMP) Wins Design for Real-time Aircraft Information System, Enabling Internet Access from 30,000 Feet

B.O.S. - Better On-line Solutions (NASDAQ:BOSC) - affiliate Surf Communication Solutions (Surf) today announced an agreement with Formation, Inc. to integrate its universal port software, including the Surf Multi-access Pool(TM)(SMP)(TM) running V.90 high-speed modems, into a new real-time aircraft information system being developed by Formation.
Formation provides highly innovative communications and multi-media products, systems and technology to growth markets such as in-flight entertainment and avionics. In recent years, Formation has contributed significant engineering advances to air traffic control and call center operations.
The new system will provide digital communications and in-flight entertainment and information services capabilities to the cabin of an aircraft. In Flight Network(TM) will provide live television, recorded video, audio, Internet and email services to airline passengers, both in-flight and on the ground, throughout the world. In Flight Network(TM) is the recently announced joint venture of News Corporation and Rockwell Collins.
To enable the Internet and e-mail services, Formation needed multi-modem functionality on the platform. "Formation evaluated various commercially available solutions, but Surf''''s software implementation, with its hardware reference designs and SMP scheduler provides not only the functionality required by a system as advanced as we are developing, but gave us a critical time-to-market benefit. By utilizing Surf''''s SMP software, dual TMSC6202 DSP reference design and Windows NT drivers, we are able to build our own modem cards very quickly. We intend to run 12 channels of full V.90 modems on each 6202 DSP, giving us the equivalent of a full T1-span of modems on a single board to meet the rigorous space requirements of the avionic environment," said Paul Kuphal, Executive Vice President and COO for Formation, Inc.
Surf''''s software solution provides 24 full modems on only two Texas Instruments C6202 DSPs. Not only does this solution provide complete support for the latest modem, IP-based fax and voice capabilities, but the large 6202 memory addressing space along with SMP memory management software will facilitate future upgrades such as V.92 modem and the V.44 protocol for web browsing.
"Surf''''s strategy of adopting a supercore DSP architecture such as the TI C6202 is validated by our design wins at companies like Italtel and Formation. This architecture allows us to provide a complete access solution, using a very simple and easily managed hardware design," said Arnon Netzer, Surf''''s Vice President, Software Engineering.
