jmac,
Montreal is one of our Canadian gems - very European flavour compared to other cities ie Toronto and Vancouver.

Politically, we used to have a three party system - they were Liberal, Conservative and NDP. Our last Conservative Prime Minister all but killed the Conservative party, but it rose again as the Reform party, then Reform died and it has risen yet once again under the Alliance banner. The NDP party is still an official party, but holds few seats in the House. Currently, the official opposition in Parliament is the Bloc Quebecois. The Bloc strangely enough is the party that wants Quebec to separate from Canada! As I write this, I'm realizing how complicated we are. The Liberals are currently in office.

Anyway, we never vote directly for our Prime Minister. Rather we vote for the candidate we want to represent us in our particular riding and most parties put forward candidates in each riding or constituency. At the end of the day, whichever party has won the most seats, the leader of that party becomes our Prime Minister.

Our Senate is filled with patronage appointments from current and previous governments - a useless institution in Canada. Pigs at a trough comes to mind.

Details of the elections are not released untill the last poll has closed in the west - which is always 8 pm. More often than not, when Canadians hear the results at 8, the election has already been won before the ballots in the west have even been counted. And that's because our population is very heavily skewed to the East.

Our next election will be held on November 27th. Our choices are between a mediocre party and two completely unacceptable parties. Very difficult.
