No one liked my Abe Lincoln election item? Try this what if question: What if Pearl Harbor had NOT been attacked by the Japanese on December 7, 1941? By late 1941, the War was over two years old. The Japanese were not threatened at all in the Pacific(save token British/Australian resistance). In Europe, England stood alone(for all intents and purposes). The Germans owned western Europe and felt so omnipotent that they could contemplate the invasion of Russia. Had the US not been attacked at Pearl, how much longer would it have been before the US would have entered WWII? An extra year, two years? I don't know. I am certainly not a military expert, but Churchill believed that every delay in entry of the US was extremely damaging to Allied(essentially England's) chances of holding Hitler back. Unfortuantely, US isolationism in 1941 was still very high and there was no groundswell for entering the conflict. In fact, the America First committee, led by none other than Charles Lindbergh, was strongly in favor of American neutrality. Churchill imparted those concerns directly to Roosevelt in the Summer of 1941 aboard a yacht in the English Channel. Roosevelt replied and said the following to Churchill: "All I need is an incident"...a reference to a justification for entry by the US into the war. Within six months, Japanese carrier groups traversed 4000 miles of ocean unnoticed(albeit radar was in its infancy, but 4000 miles!) and attacked Pearl Harbor, while all three US carriers were fortunately(conveniently planned?) at sea. Thus, the bulk of US forces were not hit. The US entered the war on both fronts immediately and Hitler foolishly continued to plan the failed invasion of Russia. By that time, the US presence was indeed formidable and his days were numbered. But what if Pearl had never been attacked? I can see Oliver Stone's rewrite of history already<g> Interesting?
