Having a lot of your brain outside of your skull opens you up to brain injury.

Well I know that. And calling it a brain injury rather than a detached retina doesn't really change my heart rate!

Possibly you are taking my comments more seriously than I intended them. <ggg>

What do you mean, all that sensory equipment being HAULED around? Gee, I'm only talking about some spare eyes--really light ones. Naturally they would have the same or better protective mechanisms as I am accustomed to. Plus, the brain is already bifurcated. What is wrong with resizing the clusters and partitioning into different sectors, including a DOS program to rebuild any damaged eyes? OK.

Do you know what I've always wondered? You mentioned dissecting insect eyes. From that you make inferences from function. But I would really like to experience what is experienced by other life forms. Perhaps I have. Don't know. Have you ever tried to catch a fruit fly? Sometimes I can luck out. Other times, they are aware of me and make me look the fool with their easy evasions of my clumsy efforts. What are they thinking. They will land on a moving frond; But a moving finger...no way.
