VCD/SVCD players bowing out
Declining prices of DVD players are having an impact on the VCD player line. As DVD prices continue to fall, output and demand for VCD players are expected to decrease further in 2001.
Nevertheless, buyers may be attracted by the low-priced models available in the mainland. Basic models are available at $38, and value-added super VCD players are usually less than $58 for volume buyers.

Currently, overseas markets absorb about 30 percent of the country's total output, with major markets including Africa, Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Southeast Asia.

Over the last year, VCD prices have fallen by around 30 percent. Makers estimate that prices will continue to fall, due to fierce competition and mature technology. However, the decrease is likely to be minor in cases where buyers require a good level of quality, said Li Yukun, general manager of Diwa Electronic Science and Technology Co. Ltd.

Most leading makers, including Guangdong Jinzheng Electronics Co. Ltd, believe the VCD line still has a few good years to run. Most are adding more features to their products, such as MP3, OKO and education games. A recording function should also breath new life into the VCD industry. Makers such as Malata Group Co. Ltd have introduced portable models with TFT-LCD screens.

Several companies in mainland China have also developed digital video disc recorders or VDRs.
