wiz, as i alluded to, the different parties have the same goal, but they try to achieve it two different ways. iow, they pander to different groups.

depending on what group you are in, you are more likely to like one group's methods rather than another.

everything is cost vs benefit as interpreted by one's value system. the cost of running an efficient program to help the genuinely needed is not much compared to the benefit for my value system. others may see it as a total waste of money (yeah, even folks who'll spend $10 grand to keep their 13 yo dog alive another year! ;-) well, -ng-.

most folks vote for the person who will "give" them the most by "taking" it from others - hence the incentive for govt to spend more than they take in. everyone thinks everyone else's district ought to be less greedy while everyone votes greedy in their own district.

bottom line, your friend benefits greatly from the pandering of the republican party - probably financially, emotionally and intellectually - based on his values system.
